In-Series and WP-DB-Backup Updates

My In-Series plugin is being taken over by a new developer, and has a new home at http://remstate.com/projects/in-series/. If you use In-Series, you should update your bookmarks and download the latest version.

Il Filosofo has released a new version of WP-DB Backup, as well. This version updates for the new scheduling functionality in the forthcoming WordPress 2.1 release. If you're a WP-DB Backup user, please be sure to update your bookmarks in order to keep up with Il Filosofo, since I'm no longer working on this plugin.

Bugtraq: WordPress Database Backup

My WordPress Database Backup plugin appeared on Bugtraq today. The folks who found the directory traversal vulnerability didn't inform me about it. I don't know if they informed the WordPress security folks. A kind reader forwarded to me the announcement.

I don't have a fix at this time. Stay tuned here, or at the WordPress support forums.

UPDATE: Ryan Boren cooked up a fix for the directory traversal vulnerability. Download it here.

WP-DB Backup 1.7

WP DB Backup 1.7 is now available.

This version features better error handling, some modest internationalization changes, and an update to the documentation. If you experienced trouble with version 1.6, please try 1.7 and let me know if it works for you!

WP-DB Backup 1.6

I'm pleased to announce the immediate availability of WP-DB-Backup 1.6!

This version has received a major overhaul, courtesy of Owen:

a screenshot of WP-DB Backup in action

As you can see from the screenshot above, there's a progress meter now, telling you how far along in the backup process you are. Each table is still backed up individually, but now each table is also backed up just a few rows at a time, to better support tables with huge numbers of rows (as might be found from stats or anti-spam plugins).

WP-DB Backup should now handle databases of all sizes! Indeed, it's been tested successfully on two large databases -- one nearly 10 megs, and one over 32 megs -- as well as several small ones.

WP-DB Backup now also automatically detects gzip support. If available, your backup will be compressed on the fly; if not available, no compression will occur (obviously).

Now that huge databases can be backed up reliably, I have added support for optional tables to be included in the scheduled backups. Remember, though, that most email servers block attachments larger than about 5 megabytes. If you have an enormous database, the scheduled backup email delivery may fail.

French translation available -- thanks Ozh!

WP-DB Backup 1.5

wp-db-backup-1.5.zip

This version of WP-DB Backup should be better for everyone. The foreach warnings if you have no data should be gone -- if they're not, please let me know.

This version also better handles large databases. The database backup is spooled, 10 rows at a time, to the server's hard disk. If the final backup file is greater than 2 megabytes in size, gzip compress will not be used, even if you ask for it. A friendly message will inform you that the database was too big to gzip, and that the file remains uncompressed.

Finally, this version should fully support internationalization. If you translate the included wp-db-backup.pot file, please send it to me so that I can make it make it available to others!

Many thanks to Owen, Lorelle, and Stefano for their contributions!
