WP-DB Backup 1.7 feed icon

WP DB Backup 1.7 is now available.

This version features better error handling, some modest internationalization changes, and an update to the documentation. If you experienced trouble with version 1.6, please try 1.7 and let me know if it works for you!

Any chance you will add back in the option not to gzip? I have had to either fall back to 1.5 or use a hacked version of GamerZ's backup manager to work on a Windoze box (it is nice because of the table optimization but one is forced to backup all tables).
  • Buzzdee
Thanks for the update, I tried the new version, but I have the same problems like before. This time I got this error message: Creating backup file... Could not open the backup file for writing! The backup dir is def. writable.

I've installed this, but when I click the backup button I get the progress screen and then nothing else ever happens. I am using WP 1.5.2 and Firefox 1.0 on a Mac.
  • skippy
Ruby: anything being reported in your web server's error log? Any web filtering software in use?
  • Ruby Sinreich
All I see in the log is a lot og robots looking for favicon.ico and missing.html (never heard of that one). I have two different blogs on the same server (with separate WP installs and separate SQL databases). One blog backed up fine, and the other doesn't do anything. I will have to look into this. Thanks for your help and your awesome plugins, Skippy!

Ruby: What other plugins are you using on the blog that doesn't work correctly? It might be a plugin conflict.
  • Juraj Kubica
Hi! I have made the translation of WP-DB-Backup into Slovak. But I am unable to make WordPress to use my translated wp-db-backup.mo file. I put it into wp-includes/languages and even into /plugins directory, but I see just original english version. What's wrong? And where should I post my translated .po file? BTW, I think your .pot file is not actual...
  • skippy
Juraj: (I think) you'll need to make sure that your .mo file is named wp-db-backup-sk.mo. The file belongs in /wp-content/plugins/. Can you explain what you mean by "your .pot file is not actual" ?
  • Juraj Kubica
Thanks! I changed name and location as you suggested and now it works smoothly. Maybe you should take a clarification note into documentation... About that .pot file note - I just woried it looked like from previous version of plugin, but it is OK. And where should I post my wp-db-backup-sk.po file?
  • skippy
Juraj: please email the file to me, and I'll add it to the language repository for the plugin. Thanks!
  • Steffen
Installed and running ... works great.
  • GaryP
Skippy, I have a copy of WPress with Cron and Backup plugins running on a local machine that does not have e-mail access. Any thought of allowing the Cron'd Backup to be able to choose if I want it emailed or just saved to the local machine? Thanks!
  • skippy
GaryP: no, I will not provide an option to automatically save the backup file to disk. This is a security issue.
  • Adam
This is an awesome plugin! But it's not working for me though... On WP 1.5.2 (latest) and backup folder on 777 mode, Creating backup file… Could not open the backup file for writing! .... I checked everything 100 times this morning.. and can't figure out what's wrong..
  • Adam
Skippy, I tried 1.6 and 1.5 version and it seems 1.5 is working fine. On 1.6, there is no error window, but also the progress bar does not fill up...
  • Ramon
I had the same problem than Adam, PHP version 4.3.1 on a Linux Mandrake 9.1 and WordPress 1.5.1.2 All time I receive errors about file permission or directory permission. I solve everything avoiding use of gzip compression changing the line 32 Before: return function_exists('gzopen'); After: return false; Skippy: very good job with the plugin! many thanks for your great job. Regards
  • Adam
Thx Ramon! It's working all right now ^____^
  • Verbie
Howdy, What combination of permission ticks do you recommend for the "backup" folder in this plugin? I was looking on the wikki and it says to make it writeable by server...but my crawling through previous threads didn't turn up many understandable answers (or at least, understandable to me). I use filezilla, and when viewing attributes I can tick owner, group and public - read, write and execute for all. I can also enter the straight three digit numeric value.
  • skippy
Verbie: without knowing how your server is configured, I will be unable to provide a better answer than "writable for all". If you make the directory writable for everyone, obviously the web server can write the backup file to disk. If you have the time and patience, you can try all the combinations for "writable" one by one, to see which work and which don't.
  • Verbie
I took your advice and played around with them, and found a solution I feel good about. Thanks for the wonderful plugin!
  • neal
works great so far, what would I need to do in the event I had to restore the back up?
  • skippy
neal: To restore, you'd need to use a tool like phpMyAdmin. Writing a "restore" plugin isn't high on my task list right now, because it's the kind of thing people would use so infrequently.
  • GlatzoPatzo
nice plugin! i thought about doing something like that myself until i found yours :-) i had to comment line 32 (gzip) and replace it with return false to get it work.
  • Tom Loudon
Sorry to add to your woes. I downloaded the plugin for the first time but I am having a little trouble. If I do a backup to my machine the file only has the first 6 lines in (up to the ------------). If I do one to the server the file is never made but there are no errors. Email works fine but it is my least favourable option. If anyone could shed any light on this I would be grateful.
  • Arne Trautmann
I encountered a strange behavior of the new plugin: I created the directory, installed 1.7 and started the backup process. The plugin said it could not open the backup file for writing. I checked the folder and it WAS writeable, still it insisted it wasn't. I could not find out why and so simply tried (could not hurt) to install WP-DB-backup 1.4 instad. It worked fine with the same folder. Since it seems to work I do not have an urgent need to use 1.7, but maybe there is a hidden error in there somewhere. Hope this is helpful.
  • skippy
Arne: when you say that the directory was "writable", can you elaborate on whether it was writable for everyone? For testing sake, if you have not yet done so, make the permissions on the directory 666 (or 777, either one). Several other people have reported this behavior, too, and I've not yet found anything specific on which to affix the blame.
  • Eric
Hi Skippy, You do great plugins (I'm also using gravatars) but I have few problems with wp-db backup 1) had to set the backup folder to 777 2) selecting (as per default) the option to download doesn't work for me, I have first to create it in the backup folder and then download it using the here link 3) What software should I use to unpacke it on my home computer 7Zip, simplyzip, squeeze don't recognize the file nor can I use arc_converter? 4) I am installing 3 individual blogs in my site, I installed wp-db backup on one of them, it does preselects the proper tables related to the first plugin install but displays all other tables even those not blog related. How can I limit the display to only corresponding blog relevant prefixed tables? Eric
  • skippy
Eric: I'm not sure what would cause your second issue. The compressed file is gzipped, which both WinZip and 7-Zip should both handle. As for limiting the tables to select: there's no easy way to do that. The plugin looks at all the tables available inside your database, and presents them all to you. This is by design, so that this single script can backup as much of the data in your database as possible.
  • Eric
Hi Skippy, Thanks for your prompt response. After posting the first message I tried again and the same thing happened couldn't ask for a direct download and after saving the package in the backup folder and clicking the download link, I couldn't open the file. If you have a look at the list of plugins I'm using you might know of one that could be in conflict (here is one of the links http://www.sunnymead.org/eleanore/blog/about/ )I also had to deactivate wp-db as I lost the content of my upload folder... The 3 blogs aren't mine and I'll do some general maintenance on them but their owners will have to handle the rest that is why I wanted to separate the backup access. Those 3 persons need a "click and go solution" may by the email solution could work I'll have to try. I also intend to add CJD notepad for one of them as she is going to be a lot on the road and access her blog mainly through cybercafés or public libraries (for her the solution might be the email option) still why would the backups be unreadable? Sorry for the long post, regards, Eric
  • skippy
Eric: can you elaborate what you mean when you say that you could not open the file? Are you unable to un-gzip it, or once you un-gzip it is it corrupted? The process of creating the backup is the same for all three options, so if one works they should all work. For completeness sake, can you try having the backup emailed to you? As for the three users: it's ultimately a bad idea to provide three people the same level of access to tables in the same database. I certainly can't tell you what to do, but I would encourage you to reconsider your use of a single database for different users. If you are stuck with this situation, feel free to contact me by email, and we can discuss how to work around this inside wp-db-backup.
  • eric
Hi skippy, 7zip, simplyzip or sqeeze don't recognize the file generated as an archive they can open. For instance 7zip gives as diagnostic message that the file ....gz is not supported archive. Also, as I did some clean up on my computer I lost my cookies and came to your site through the plugin manager page which this time allowed me to see way down on the wp-db page (most be an IE glitch...) screens of wp-db well on my screen a section is missing, the bottom one with the option to gzip the files, I have only a grayed out empty check box that I can't click (or doesn't show any reaction) and no download button, I always used the like that appears once the status bar finishes after copying the backup to the folder. For the table part the host hosting sunnymead.org gives us access to mysql services (not all of them) so for one domain only one database and it seems as many tables as I want but all tables only under one main name. Wordpress and BB plus others allow me to use a prefix for the table so I was hoping wp-db could display only tables related to the Wordpress prefixed plugin installation. regards, eric
  • skippy
Eric: can you please email me one of the backup files? I'd like to confirm for myself whether the archives are corrupt or not. Version 1.7 of WP-DB Backup no longer allows you to select gzip or not. If your host supports gzip (which most do), the backup file will be automatically gzipped. If the host does not support gzip, the backup file will be left as plain uncompressed text. And as I said in my previous comment, feel free to contact me by email to discuss how to limit the backup to just the tables sharing the WordPress prefix.
  • aoeking2
hi this plugin is really helpful however it doesn't work for me check out http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=54862094&size=o in the pop-up error windows the first 4 words means "couldn't download" and the title is "error" do you know why this error exists?
  • skippy
aoeking2: that error could be caused by several things. Did you follow the instructions in the readme? Is the /wp-content/backup/ directory writable by your webserver? Do any of the backup options work? Some folks have reported failure when selecting "download to my computer" but have had success with email delivery of the backup file.
  • aoeking2
I am not really sure that what "Is the /wp-content/backup/ directory writable by your webserver? " mean, does it mean that change the arributes to "777"? (please see http://www.flickr.com/photos/aoeking2/55464313/) And all 3 options don't work, they all experience the same error window. And sorry for troubling you
  • skippy
mode 666 should suffice, as that allows everyone to create files in the specified directory. Some people have had success disabing the gzip detection process I use. You can try this yourself by editing wp-db-backup.php. Change line 32 from this: return function_exists('gzopen'); to this: return false; Please let me know if that fixes the problem for you.
  • aoeking2
I have changed it but it still doesn't work....
  • aoeking2
But this time that error window disappeared, but it still doesn't work
  • Bernd
Really cool plugin! Are there any chances that you implement a restore feature for this plugin? Cheers Bernd
  • skippy
Bernd: no, I have no plans on writing a restore feature. Restoring is pretty easy to do, and is arguably the kind of thing you do once after an emergency. For that, phpMyAdmin should suffice.
  • Quetzalcoatl
This is a great plug-in. The first time I used it - worked perfectly. I didn't like the fact that you forced me to backup the options table (this changes from host to local development machine) so I made a simple adjustment to line 711 that removed options from the table list. It now turns up on the optional side. Thanks again. David

Hi. Excellent plugin. Just to add info to others comments about backup folder permissions; I have to chmod it to 777. 666 does not work. It gives the 'directory not writeable' message immediately. Another very silly Q: Not being very familiar with CGI and SQL, does this plug-in backup the entire CGI installation, or just the stuff on the SQL server?
  • Remi
Thanks for this plugin. I have installed and it is working fine however it only backup to End of data contents of table `ngr_categories` It does not include posts or comments and other wordpress option. Could you please help on this. There is no error when the backup progress does the back up. I am running 1.5.2 WP
  • skippy
Howie: WP-DB-Backup only backs up your SQL database. You will still need to back up your PHP files. Remi: are there any messages in your webserver's error log? Does the problem occur regardless of which delivery mechanism you select?
  • Remi
For various reasons my host doesn't give me access to my webserver's error log. However when i go into database I can export the database without any problem. It is running on MySQL 4.0.24. Any ideas?

Skippy, I love the WP DB backup plugin. But I hacked my copy so that it backs up only once a week instead of daily--daily's just too often. Especially since there's a lot of talk on the wp-hackers list now about bundling your plugin with WordPress, could you add a weekly option to WP DB backup and a weekly hook to WP Cron?
  • skippy
Remi: does the backup send you the same truncated file regardless of which delivery option you choose? How big is your database? filosofo: it sounds like you've done most of the work for me! Can you send your modifications?

My ISP server is Windows based. WP-DB Backup 1.4 worked for me, but however after I updated to 1.7, it doesn't work any more. It says the wp-content/backup directory is not writable, but I am pretty sure that the permission of this directory is RW. Please help, thanks a lot!
  • skippy
wangxiaohu: try changing permissions on the backup directory to 777: full control for everyone. That seems to fix the problem for some folks. Else, if you know for certain that the directory is writable, you can edit wp-db-backup.php to comment out the bits that check whether it can write to the target directory.
  • Yuval
Greetings, I have a problem with the plugin and I can not find a solution. I have a wordpress 1.5.2.1 running on linux. I downloaded your latest backup plugin. I authorized read-write-execture for the backup directory BUT -- when I I press on the "backup!" button and try to backup I get an error message: "the backup file could not be saved. please check permissions for writing to your backup directory and try again". no matter what I do, I can not seems to convince it that it can write into this directory. I tried to change the directory name and location - nothing worked. I also tried to use different options (to save, to send my mail, to download) - nothing works. same error over and over. I called to my site host manager and they verified that this directory is writable. please -- HELP! :) 10X
  • skippy
Yuval: first, upgrade to WordPress 1.5.2, the latest stable version of WordPress. Second, try changing permissions on the backup directory to 777 (chmod 777 wp-content/backup/). Does that help?
  • Yuval
Skippy, Well, I cant relly upgrade since it is an Hebrew version and there is no 1.5.2 version yet of Hebrew wordpress. about the permissions: it is (and was) set on 777. and no, it does not help. any maybe just one more thing: when I tried to replace the backup directory to a different one and did not give it the 777 permission - the backup button (in the plugin screen) was not there: it said - there is no write permission on your directory (and it was right!). but here, it does not say that. I CAN press on the backup button, and I get the new screen but right on the begining, it all stops with this error message.
  • ThatMan
Skippy, Thanx for the great plugin! you're the best! Using it with wp-cron! Thanx!

I noticed that when either '$this->backup_dir' in line 235 or '$filename' in line 237 is failed to access, your code prompts the '...try again' error message. I have included strings in these two error outputs, and now it turns out that it is my '$filename' file not accessible, not '$this->backup_dir' directory. Again, my ISP hosting is using Windows server. So, does your code set the file, i.e. '$filename', to correct permissions before writting to it?

I found that I had to make the backup directory also executable in permission ( 776 ) rather than just writeable. No idea why, but once I'd changed to that from just writeable, it worked fine.

Hello Skippy. At the 2.0 Plugin Compatibility, this pluging as well as wp-cron, is listed as both working and not working with WordPress 2.0 beta-1. I wonder, does it work or not?
  • crea-doo
Hi! I have made the translation of wp-db-backup into German. You can download it here
  • skippy
Jan: I haven't yet tested any of my plugins with WordPress 2.0 beta. From what I've seen, I don't think there's anything in 2.0 that would cause problems with WP-Cron -- it's just a collection of do_action() calls.

Beautiful Skippy I had no problems sith the 1.6 version and the 1.7 version works lika breese! Hi, my blog is running on a Windows server that don't allow to set a directory writable. I only have on my space a preformatted dir (/public) in wich I can write from webserver. Is there somewhere the option to change the target directory pro the db backup? Thanx a lot ciao Carlo (Venice - ita)
  • skippy
    Carlo: you can edit the source of wp-db-backup.php to define the backup destination you need: define('WP_BACKUP_DIR', 'wp-content/backup');
  • grandMasterkrust
Great Plugin - Worked off the bat....makes admin so much easier !
  • fmf
Hallo. I tried this plugin and it works fine, but it only allows me to do manual backup. I choose to deliver backup to a mail address and if i trigger Backup button i can see the progress bar and at the end i have my backup in mail. But if i set up daily schedule to mail new backups i don't receive any mail. The plugin configuration page tells: Last WP-Cron Daily Execution: 5 December 2005 @ 13:23 Next WP-Cron Daily Execution: 6 December 2005 @ 13:23 but the 6 December execution has never happened. I also have wp-cron 1.4 installed. Any idea?
  • skippy
fmf: I don't have any specific suggestions, unfortunately. WP-Cron is not entirely reliable, and it's possible that the scheduled backup process is aborting for some reason, or WP-Cron itself is failing in some way. Have you tried enabling the wp-cron-reminder plugin, to confirm that WP-Cron is executing (semi-)regularly?

Very handy plugin! After seeing so many "be sure to backup your database" messages with other plugins installation instructions -- this has really been useful to have. :-) Thanks!

I am running WP2 RC2 and could not get backup to run, I changed the CHMOD to 777 and it backed up fine. When I select other tables to include, it just sits there. I am using the 1.7 ver that came bundled with the plugin from WP. Is there any difference between the one I would download from you and the one in WP? Any suggestions where I could start to try and get it to back up MySQL plugins tables?

    Hi, I found that the backup_table() function does not handle NULL database values, so backup may be incorrect. To solve the problem I substituted your original loop: .... .... foreach ($row as $key => $value) { if ($ints[strtolower($key)]) { $values[] = $value; } else { $values[] = "'" . str_replace($search, $replace, $this->sql_addslashes($value)) . "'"; } } ... ... with the following code taken from http://restkultur.ch/personal/wolf/scripts/db_backup/: foreach ($row as $key => $value) { if (!isset($row[$key])) { $values[] = 'NULL'; } else if ($value == '0' || $value != '') { // a number if ($ints[strtolower($key)]) { $values[] = $value; } else { $values[] = "'" . str_replace($search, $replace, $this->sql_addslashes($value)) . "'"; } } else { $values[]= "''"; } } Hope this can be useful. Bye, Cristian
  • skippy
Cristian: thanks! Can you give me some examples of when the original plugin failed, and what happened when it did? I've not yet experienced any trouble. You might also consider submitting a patch to trac.wordpress.org for this, since wp-db-backup is now bundled with WordPress.
  • cristian
Yes. I use wp1.5, php 5.0 and mysql5.0.15 in my local machine. With wordpress database i've not found any problem at the moment (see below though). But I'm modifying your plugin to add the backup of Gallery2 database and with your original backup_table() function I've discovered that the generated script is incorrect. PhpmyAdmin is not able to restore the generated script and report errors around fields that have NULL values in the original db. In the generated script NULL values are substituted with nothing! With the patch all is ok! The generated script is equivalent to the phpmyadmin backup. I think that NULL values must be handled. In WP db the 'wp_postmeta` table has two field that can have NULL values (it's the unique fields in all the db!) CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `wp_postmeta` ( .... .... `meta_key` varchar(255) default NULL, `meta_value` text, .... .... I've not yet tried the patch on the host provider (with php4.3.11, mysql 4.1.15) but the NULL values handling is a general issue in the original plugin. Bye, Cristian

Hi Skippy, your plugin is really cool but... It works on my pc (xp with easyPhp) but not on my provider. I'v got this message : WordPress database error: [Access denied for user 'pierre.xxxx'@'xxx.xx.xx.xxx' to database 'DB_NAME'] SHOW TABLE STATUS FROM `DB_NAME` Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in bla/bla/bla/wp-db-backup.php on line 766 apparently it never retrieve the DB_NAME constant... If i run the script it works but when the process ended the named file is DB_NAME_wp_dateoffile.sql.gz the sql file inside has the same name and when i look in it the "parameter" (line 5) is : Database: `DB_NAME` So what's wrong doctor ;) TIA Pierre
  • skippy
Pierre: that's an error I've not seen before. What version of PHP is being used?
  • Pierre
Hi Skippy, the version of PHP is 4.3.10
  • skippy
Pierre: I'm not sure what to say: if WordPress works properly, there's really no reason why WP-DB Backup should fail. Just for completeness sake, have you tried uploading the plugin again?
  • Pierre
Yes sure Wordpress works like a charm, i activate deactivate reactivate the plugin, re-upload it... I modify the code a little to try to retrieve the username (DB_USER) with no more luck. It seems that the constants are unavailables in the plugin context... i've "harcoded" the dbname and the error disapear meaning that your code can access to database property but not to his name. Strangely, i have no problem (i've reverified) in others plugins/pages to retrieve these constants and use them in a normal way (they're constants no ? ;). Hopping you can explain and help me with that strange problem :) Pierre
  • skippy
Pierre: what other plugins are you using? It might be that another plugin is, for some reason, unsetting the constant definition. Does WP-DB Backup work correctly if you disable other plugins?
  • Pierre
No i have already done that test :( i disabled all the others plugins and retry without success. Any other idea ?
  • Pierre
I've got it !!! excuse me for your time Skippy :) i've found the problem. I've made other test with another plugin and i was wrong, in my third post, the other plugin (in fact Backup Restore ver. 1.5) had the same problem it generate a header with DB_NAME (and not the name of the database) and your application had a normal "comportment". My free host provider put a wp-config in the home directory with only one parameter DB_PASSWORD (i don't know why) and that's why your plugin never retrieved the DB_NAME constant (like it doesn't exist :). I don't found this particularity quickly, because i've got a correct wp-config.php file, with all parameters, on my pc so... Thank you again for your very nice working ;) plugin Skippy. Excuse me again for that false alert. I wish you happy new year in advance, and a lot of good things for you and all your family. Amically, Pierre.

Skippy, I've upgraded to 2.0 and the v.1.7 of the plugin always gives me the message: "WARNING: Your backup directory is NOT writable! We can not create the backup directory. /home/isomd/public_html/journal/". I get this even when the directory is set to 777 and every variation thereof. I am running: WordPress 2.0 Apache 1.3.33 PHP 4.3.11 MySQL 4.0.25-standard Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
  • skippy
Servant: if you're using the version of wp-db-backup bundled with WordPress 2.0, you need to make your /wp-content/ directory writable. This version of the plugin creates a semi-random directory in which to store the temporary files.
  • Servant
It is, but the error continues.
  • Matteo Raggi
This is a full useful software! I was using it some days ago for a sample, but I was receiving the DB with only the list of the categories, with 1.5.2 now I have to work with it on 2.0 thank you again!

I have a problem, the backup script only backup the categories. The other tables aren't backuped. I use the wordpress 2.0 plugin and that here from this page. Any idea?

  • björn
Size of the complete database(with other tables): ~2MB Plugins: nonofollow, Live Comment Preview, CSS Compress It doesn't work, too when I disable all other plugins. The process show that he backup all the wordpress tables, but the result is: that it has backup the categories only. ;(
  • louie
I do not receive my backups on my email. Any idea why is it like that?
  • skippy
Louie: No, I don't have any idea why you're not getting the email. How big is your database? If it's more than a couple of megabytes, it's possible that your mail provider is rejecting the message. You can contact your host to ask for their help determining whether the email is being generated at all -- if it is, they'll have a record of the connection in the mail server log, and should be able to tell you why it's not going through.
  • Adam Saunders
FYI. Just installed version 1.7 and noticed that the .txt installation guide only opens correctly in Word and Wordpad, but not in notepad. Possibly it is saved as an RTF file even though it is labeled TXT.
  • skippy
Adam: the text file was composed in vim on my GNU/Linux workstation. It should be plaintext.

Hi, Using your newest version but after the backup completes, the file it produces is empty except for the following lines: # WordPress MySQL database backup # # Generated: Tuesday 3. January 2006 21:51 SGT # Hostname: localhost # Any ideas?
  • skippy
Alan: for comparison, try using a different browser. Several folks have reported weirdness with one browser and success in another.
  • Alan
Hi again, I've been using Mozilla Firefox; I just tried Explorer. Same result. Alan
  • Alan
Skippy, I went back, uninstalled all my plugins so that yours would be functioning alone. Same effect. I uninstalled yours then backed up to the previous version of the backup plugin. I tried both the email and download options. Both give me a file but only the first few lines of the database text. I used both Explorer and Firefox with the same result.
  • Alan
Skippy, I went back and uploaded your first version: 1.4. It works fine for me. Weird.
  • Sened
I am using your plugin, everything seems to be working, but my weblog is in french and all the accented characters get lost to horrible é… and such... I have already installed the French language .mo and .po files. What should I do?
  • Quang Anh
Your plugin is great! However, it goes wrong for me. My blog is in Vietnamese and I have to use UTF-8 charset for it. Seems that you use ISO-8859. All of my characters become something horrible, like Sened posted above. Is changing ISO-8859 to UTF-8 fix this problem? Thanks a lot. And sorry for my bad English.
  • skippy
Quang Anh: that may well be the problem. Give it a try, and please let me know what happens!
  • Quang Anh
Yes, it worked! Perfectly! I've just updated my blog to WP 2.0. Without your plugin, I'm unable to do that. Thanks for writing this useful plugin, again. :D
  • Jessica
To restore your backup (if you've never used phpMyAdmin before, like me), you can find instructions at http://codex.wordpress.org/Restoring_Your_Database_From_Backup. Just thought that might help someone who's searching these comments in a panic.
  • Justine
I installed the WP2.0 bundled with WP-DB-Backup plugin. Everything works fine except one minor thing. I selected the backup option -- "Download to your computer" and after the backup is completed and the Download window prompt, I clicked "Cancel" instead of "Save". Then when I tried to download again, it shows me "file not found". The same happened to the other backup options as well. It seems once the download link is clicked, the backup file gets removed from the directory. Is it designed this way if you click the download link, you better download the file, otherwise do the backup again?
  • skippy
Justine: that is correct. As soon as the backup is sent to you, it is deleted from the server. I consider it a moderate security risk to leave the backup on the server, since the backup contains passwords, email addresses, and possibly private posts. If you want the file, don't click "Cancel". If you do click "Cancel", you need to execute a fresh backup.
  • David
Forgive me for being "noob-ish" but I'm a very new WP user. I'm using WP 2.0 and it came with the 1.7 version of the plugin. I have created the directories as the instructions show, and I have activated the plugin. The plugin says it is activated, but when I log in as an administrator and click the Manage link, I don't see an option on the second line that says Backup. I have tried changing my permissions on my wp-content/backup folder to 777 and that doesn't show it to me either. I have also tried various browsers to try to rule out a caching problem. Any clues how I can fix this?
  • David
Just an update... Since I am only using a test database for now, and don't have any actual data. I tried something out so that I could start from scratch and see if I could get the backup button to show up. I dropped my whole database and then recreated it. Then I ran the install script again which rebuilt my database. The first thing I did then was to activate the plugin, and NOW I can see the backup button. I'm not sure why I couldn't see it before, but it is working now.
  • bi11i
I have two databases with several blogs in each. One database, the plugin works great. In another database, it doesn't. When heading to Manage/Backup, I only get a list of the *other* tables in the database and not the core tables. This is all local, so I can eliminate the possibilty of corrupt plugin, although i have recopied it in place several times (and from another working location.) PHP v5.0.4 and mySQL 4.1.14...?
  • lumihiutale
I am using the version of WP-DB Backup 1.7 bundled with WordPress 2.0, and was getting the error: Creating backup file… Could not open the backup file for writing! I made the random backup directory the plugin automagically creatied writable, changed the line about the gzip compression, but alas, it still didn't work. My solution was to create my own backup directory and make it writable, change the code to reflect the backup directory I just created, and presto! Worked like a charm. Thanks for an excellent plugin.

wp-db-backup fails when 'define ('WPLANG' is defined. (set to another language than English).
  • Psykotik
Thanks Skippy for your great plugin. Would it be possible to add to next release a handy shortcut to select ALL tables in one click ? I use the same database for some other applications (but related to wordpress), and it would be very convenient to me.
  • Hilary
Hi. I received this error upon activating the plugin that I installed following an upgrade to Wordpress 2.0:
WARNING: Your backup directory is NOT writable! We can not create the backup directory. /home/superjux/public_html/wordpress/ WARNING: Your backup directory is NOT writable! We can not create the backup directory. /home/superjux/public_html/wordpress/backup-69b9e/
When I went to make the backup directory writable, I noticed it didn't exist. So, I created and made it writable. Now, however, I still get the other warning, about the wordpress directory. Please advise. Hilary
  • skippy
Hilary: you should be able to ignore the second warning. If you have created the backup directory and made it writable by the webserver, that should suffice for the backup plugin.
  • February 2nd, 2006
  • Hilary
Hmm, now I get an error saying that the backup directory is not writable, although it is. Any ideas? Thanks!
  • Hilary
Looks like I have the same problem as lumihiutale above, although I don't understand their fix.
  • Hilary
Sorry for yet another comment. I changed it to 777 instead of 755 and it worked. Is 777 okay to have as the permissions? Hilary
  • skippy
Hilary: you can use 666, which removes the "execute" bit. This is marginally safer.
  • Hilary
Okay, now I have a different issue. I upgraded to 2.0.1 and when I go to manage--backup, I get this error:
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class wpdbbackup in /home/superjux/public_html/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-db-backup-17.php on line 26
    Any ideas? Thanks!
  • Hilary
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class wpdbbackup in /home/superjux/public_html/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wp-db-backup.php on line 23
  • skippy
Hilary: try de-activating the plugin, deleting the plugin file, and then re-uploading the plugin file from the WordPress 2.01 release. Activate the plugin, and see what happens.
  • Hilary
Yeah, I tried that. Still didn't work.
  • Toru
Hi. I think this is the most basic and the defnite plugin out there, and its good that it now comes default with WP2. Especially for a newbie like me. However, I have a problem. The backuping process finishes without any error, on all 3 different backuping options. I get message saying its done. But. When I try to extract the downloaded file, it tells me that it is a corrupted file. I noticed this when I upgraded from 2.0 to 2.0.1, and checked the file, as it says in codex. I backuped using Myphp admin, then. Any advice ? Many thanks.
  • DJ Sonic
Great plugin! It's much more comfortable making backups using this plugin than using phpMyAdmin. In combination with WP-Cron you can almost forget making backups. But I have one suggestion: If you use the plugin together with WP-Cron it would be nice if you can select at which time or how often you want automatic backups to be made. I don't need a db-backup everyday. Once a week would be enough for me. Anyway, nice work ;)
  • Benjamin Melançon
Uploading Thank you, Skippy, and I hope you don't regret hitting the big time with your gift to the wordpress world! I don't have any problem with the plug-in itself, but I'm posting my issue here in the hopes someone can help because it seems sort of related. When I try to put up the backed-up tables, to move locally-developed sites on-line, phpMyAdmin tells me the SQL is no good. I know this isn't WP-DB Backup's fault, because phpMyAdmin has the same problem with the code it produces. It's the wp_options table that breaks it. Any past experience or advice? Thanks.
  • Ben Preston
This is looking pretty good. :) Thanks for the contribution. Any chance you could add a checkbox toggler so all the check boxes could be selected at once?
  • Psykotik
On 1/02, I asked for the same option as Ben asked a few days ago ("a checkbox toggler so all the check boxes could be selected at once"); Skippy, it seems you don't want to implement it, but why ? :)

I am not currently providing any additional support for my plugins. See here for why. Feel free to pay someone else to modify wp-cron to provide the feature(s) you want. I'm not going to do it.

Delete the backup directory, and md it yourself(set 777), then all will works well.
  • Brian Bonner
OK just moved a blog to a new server and it will back up the database, but it will not download it or email it. it just hangs when it gets to that part. The database is in the backup folder when I check it. I can't figure out why, it is the same verson of the plugin running the same version of wp 1.5.2. Also how do I change the time it backs up in wp-chron? It seems many servers do maintenence at midnight and it interupts the backup. It ends up making an incomplete backup. This of course is something I ran into before the new problem on the new server. All the features work fine on my blog, which is on a different server, using wp2.0. Anyone have any ideas?
  • Nigel
Awesome plugin. Something HORRIBLY missing from the product itself. Thank you. 2 suggestions: 1) could you add a buton to select all tables. I run a couple of things linked to my wordpress install, and its a pain to select all 42 tables. 2) could you add a configurable option for the backup directory (with an option for a random name). A configurable option to auto-include a set of tables for the above woud be cool too. Thanks again.
  • Nigel
Just read your reasons for not supporting things anymore. Apologies. please remove my post.

How do you restore the WP database after you have made a backup?
  • March 14th, 2006
  • Stefan
Hi, THX for this Plugin! I think I solved the problem with not writable Folders. It seems to be related to the gZIP (which many Provdiders do not support) AND the randomly created directory name. So you need to change define('WP_BACKUP_DIR', to access an existing folder AND to set function gzip() { to return false;. Works for me, though it now lacks the capability of storing multiple backups on the server? Hope this helps!
  • Sammy Russo

I'm using WP-DB Backup 1.7 and WordPress 2.0.0 and I have problems with Save to server and Email backup options. My wp-content/backup folder is 777, but after the backup, it's still empty. Also, every time I try to backup, the plugin creates a new folder, called backup-a8214, and there is only one file, called index.php, with 0kB. The only way I can download the backup file is clicking the backup link that appear when the process bar finish. Did I miss any step? How can I recive the backup in my email? Thanks!

Thanks, I had actually found some information regarding the restore inside wordpress codex.

Just wanted to say a quick thanks for this plugin. I love stuff that just works on the first try. One slight suggestion would be to include some tips on how to import the file afterwards using phpmyadmin in the help file. It's pretty straightforward, maybe just a link to this page: http://codex.wordpress.org/Restoring_Your_Database_From_Backup

I've just upgraded to WP 2.0.2 and the backup plugin doesn't work. Before I had WP 1.5 and the same 1.7 backup plugin. Now when I click on "Backup", the progress bar doesn't show anything. And this little weird graphic shows up underneathe the bar. I was playing around and eventually was able to select what was this weird "graphic" It turned out to be a small portion of the text message. I was actually able to select the text...it says. "Need higher user level."! All of the folders wp-content, backup all have 777 permissions. I'm not sure whether this is a DB user or a UNIX user permission thing. Any ideas?
  • Malte Cordes
I've also installed your plugin, but it doesn't work with WP 2.0.2: 1. I changed permissions on the backup directory to 777 (chmod 777 wp-content/backup/) AND on the content directory (chmod 777 wp-content/). 2. I changed define('WP_BACKUP_DIR', ...) AND set function gzip() { to return false;. Do you know a solution for this problem?

  • Jonah
I tried using your plugin and having an issue - hoping you can help: 1. installed WP into subdir /mydir 2. set permissions on /mydir/wp-content/backup to 777 3. said "backup directory /mydir/wp-content/backup-c4d27 NOT writeable" 4. set permissions on backup-c4d27 to 777 5. getting error "backup directory /mydir NOT writeable" 6. had to set permissions on /mydir to 777 to get it to work. why requiring 777 permissions on /mydir? even 775 would not work.
  • skippy
James and Malte (and everyone else seeking support): I am not currently providing support for my plugins. You'll need to seek help at the WordPress Support Forums. Be sure to be as explicit as possible about your host configuration when saying something doesn't work. Jonah: the version of WP-DB Backup that you're using (the one now bundled with WordPress) has been modified by Matt. The modifications require more lax permissions than the plugin that I made. As a result of the modifications, it has come to light that WordPress really wants the entire /wp-content/ directory to be writable. If you're uncomfortable with that (as well you should be), file a bug at trac.wordpress.org.

In WP 1.5.2 your plugin worked fine. Upgraded to WP 2.0.2 and no go: Backup directory not writeable. I have even set the permissions of /wp-content and subsequent /backup-##### to 777 and it still does not work. I just cannot trace the problem. Appreciate your advice. Stef

I tried all different CHMOD permissions, turns out I had to SSL into the server and change the owner from apache/apache to my user. As soon as I did that it worked perfectly. I'm running WP 2.02.

Any plans on adding a facility to backup blog files (in addition to the db)? The plugin I'm currently using (BackupRestore 1.5) is no longer being maitained. I added some fixes to it myself but don't have the expertise to keep it at a level of quality I'm comfortable with. BTW, I love the interface to your WP-DB Backup plugin. Especially the gorgeous progress bar. Would be great to get a files backup plugin using this kind of interface.

Newbie here so assume I understand nothing. My question: I have 3 WP installs using the same DB. Do I need to run a separate back up for each install? What if I do one back up (for WP install #1, for example) and make sure to check all the boxes on the right of the screen when I run it? Would that cover everything I need to restore? Lastly, my sympathies on your loss.

Very nice plugin, howvere I'm facing the same problems Nigel is writing about. The bar goes to 100% however the download only has information up to wp_options (or less). Hope you have any ideas on how to solve this. I'm working with WP 2.03 and plugin 1.7 Cheers
  • csikszem
Hi, first of all, great plugin skippy, thanks very much. I use UTF-8 code, because I'm from Hungary. I saw Quang Anh and Sened had the same problem and Quang solved it successfully. But the solving was not clear... This comment is for help different character code users to use wp-backup efficiently. We need to set up both the wordpress and the backup plugin to the same encoding. For example: if you use UTF-8 in your blog, you should hack the plugin. The way: open wp-db-backup.php file from wp-content/plugins directory and simply replace any (there's only one) ISO-8859-1 text with UTF-8 text. After this correction your backup file will be correct. Thanks again, csikszem
  • jazzle
Hi Skippy, I've noticed a couple of comments above requesting (and supplying) the option to backup weekly - could you please add this to the next version? (Or even better add this to a minor version and release it?)
  • skippy
Jazzle: I am not currently working on any of my WordPress plugins, so I'm not going to add a weekly backup option. It is my understanding that the next version of WordPress will have a built-in scheduling system, replacing the need for my WP-Cron plugin. I suspect a weekly event in the new system will be easy to create, so any work I might do now would be obsolete within a few months.

hi skippy, after updating my blog to WP 2.0.4 the daily backup with the cronjob doesn't works. some poeple in the german WP-forum discribed the same problem. Hope, you can help thank you nepf
  • skippy
nepf: saying "it doesn't work" isn't entirely helpful. What specifically doesn't work? What does work? What steps have you taken to diagnose the problem? Have you disabled then re-enabled the backup plugin? How about wp-cron? Have you consulted your web server's error log? If so, is there anything in there? Are you sure it's not a conflict with another plugin? Saying "it doesn't work" doesn't help me diagnose your problem very much. There are too many variables involved for me to be able to make any guesses.

Hi Skippy, in order to help you to find the error i made this: - i installed a new WP 2.0.4 - no other plugins - only WordPress Database Backup and - WP-Cron but got no backup tonight and the night before. No errors at the server. as I wrote above: Your plugins worked fine on many WPs for long time. I Loved this plugins and the good feel of daily backups in my mail-box. But since i updated to WP 2.0.4 the plugins stopped working. Did you tested with WP 2.0.4??? I guess a conflict between WP 2.0.4 an WP-cron/WordPress Database Backup

Skippy - you rock, man. Awesome. I changed the line define('WP_BACKUP_DIR', 'wp-content/backup-' . $rand); to define the backup directory that I created and everything worked 'tickety-boo'. While using SSH I noticed that the directory that was created, although it was set to 777, was owned by the server (apache) and not my user. Perhaps this was the trouble? Skippy - thanks, once again, dude.
  • Hande
Great plugin dude! db-backup & cron are lovely :D
  • Peter
Dear Skippy, now I have WP 2.04. Thanks for the wonderful plugin! Anyway, nice work ;)
  • Ian
Scott McCrindle: I think you are spot on there. I created a folder myself and pointed the plugin to it and it worked fine. On checking up it appeared to be an issue of ownership as you said. Cheers for the advice, and Skippy, thanks for the great plugin!
  • Monica
Hi, Skippy! I am using the plugin and I like it very much! I am having a small problem though. I am running wordpress 2.0.5 and using the Database Backup Plugin v1.7. It seems to work ok, but everytime I run a new backup I get this message on my page footer: PHP Warning: array_merge() [function.array-merge]: Argument #1 is not an array in D:\MYLOCALDIR\wp-content\plugins\wp-db-backup.php on line 197 PHP Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in D:\MYLOCALDIR\wp-content\plugins\wp-db-backup.php on line 199 I use Mac OS X and Firefox 1.5.0.8, any ideas on this issue? Thanks!
  • skippy
Monica, line 197 is this: $tables = array_merge($core_tables, $also_backup); where $core_tables should be an array of database tables in your WordPress installation. Can you use this plugin to backup your database? Does the resultant backup file actually contain any data? More specifically, does it contain your data?
  • Nick Sterling
Hey Skippy. I've found part of the cause for the hanging in the beginning of some people's backups. I think it will be fairly easy for you to figure out the rest if you take a look at my post here... http://wordpress.org/support/topic/52554?replies=12#post-474585
  • kirai
I'm getting all data corrupted using WP 2.05, Wp-db Backup 1.7, and my default character encoding for wordpress is UTF-8. I tried harcoding SET NAMES UTF-8 and nothing.
  • Jack
The plugin works fine, yet there is something I don't understand: When I look at a backup send to me daily by Cron, the size is about 400kb, unpacked about 1500kb, which also include tables use by the gallery program Plogger. When I make a backup using phpmyadmin I also get a (uncompressed) file of about 1500kb. But, when I use the backup screen within WordPress and let the plugin create a backup for me which I then download, the packed size will also be about 400kb, but unpacked just around 500kb. So I have three sql files which I can open in say Wordpad, but the last file stops somewhere within a 'post' so the backup seems to be broken. I guess the Cron backup is ok and it also uses the latin1 encoding I use on my site, but the manually backup version seems to miss all kinds of stuff although it really seems to backup all the tables. Am I making a mess of this comment ;):) ?
  • skippy
Jack, the backup plugin is under new management, so you should pursue support with Il Filosofo.
  • Jack
OK Skippy. I'm sorry I completely missed those announcements :( ... I still think this is the most important plugin ever made! What use are other plugins when your site is gone? :)

hi skippy. i've used this plugin many times and it's great! this time, though, i hung up 85% through the backup process (backing up to my computer, not to the server) i closed the browser, reopened, and now the site won't load at all! nothing...just spins and spins. can't get into phpadmin either, or my host's web-based filemanager. i can access the files through my own ftp client. any thoughts on what this could be? yikes! thanks, tchandler wordpress 2.0 k2 r167

tchandler: I'd be very surprised if the failed backup caused all of the problems you're experiencing. WordPress doesn't interact with phpMyAdmin at all. I suspect a more general problem with your host. It might be the case that a PHP process didn't terminate correctly, which caused a cascade of other problems. There's not much I can do to help you.

Hi Skippy, I guess there is a bug. I was not able to rebuilt the backup on my local apache. An expert analysed the problem and this is what he found out: http://www.mysqldumper.de/board/viewtopic.php?t=2193 The thread is in german, so I will summarize the key information. The plugin creates this: " INSERT INTO `wp_categories` VALUES (2833, 'politik', 'politik', '', 0, 0) ; " It should look like this: " INSERT INTO `wp_categories` VALUES (2833, 'politik', 'politik', '', 0, 0); " There is a space after the final ")" and the ";" which is not necessary. The Software which should rebuilt the backup crashes due to this syntax. For further information contact the developer and analyser of the Backuptool ("DSB" in the thread). Hope this helps. Regards Jochen

Hi Skippy, great plugin! But it's not working on my WP 2.1 How can I fix that? All seem to be fine but when I want to create a backup nothing happens (the loader not works). Can you please help me? Ah! One more thing, how can I upload a backup? Regards, paburmester

paburmester: I have stopped working on wp-db-backup. wp-db-backup has a new owner, and is being updated by him. Last time I looked, he claimed that it did work with WordPress 2.1. Please update all your bookmarks!
