Many folks know that Ohio is the Buckeye State, so named because the buckeye is the official state tree. Most Ohioans should know that the cardinal is the official state bird.

A news report I heard on my way to work this morning informed me that the black rat snake is the official state reptile, and legislation has been introduced (several times!) to make the bullfrog the official state amphibian.

I was pleased to further learn that tomato juice (yum!) is the official beverage of the state of Ohio. But that’s not all – we have an official fossil: the trilobyte!

I think, perhaps, that having an official state soil is taking things a bit too far.
